Let Bala be Y
Let Colin be Z

X + Y = 44 -> Y = 44 - X
Z + X = 52 -> Z = 52 - X

We know X : (Y + Z) <-- Equation (1)
5 : 14


So now sub Y & Z into eqn (1)
X : (44-X+52-X)
X : 92 - 2X <---- Equation (2)
5 : 14

So now try to sub in a value of X till equation 2 becomes the ratio 5:14. if you sub in X=20, you get the answer. hope it was helpful
